A design-led garden where a bespoke pond and sweeping curved paving transform an open plot into a calming retreat.
This garden started with a design already taking shape. Working alongside Nick and Duncan at Burton Hall Garden Design, the plan set out a garden shaped for everyday living — a generous space for dining and sitting out, room enough for planting to breathe, and, at its heart, something calming. That something became a pond, and the rest of the garden was built to lead the eye, and the feet, toward it.
Designed by Nick Burton and Duncan Hall at Burton Hall Garden Design — we built it. The brief called for a garden that worked as hard as it looked: proper space for dining and sitting out, planting given room to breathe, and a water feature to set the tone for the whole space.
Denfind stone runs through the garden as dry stone walling, steps, and paving laid in two formats — large and small — with each piece of walling selected and placed by hand. It's slow work, but it's what gives the garden its structure and a softer, more natural rhythm than a typical formal layout.
At the centre sits a bespoke pond, with a pergola and a custom-built shed anchoring the working and outdoor-living zones at either end, joined by a long curved path — holding a clean curve over that distance took careful setting out. Trellis and high-tension wire give climbing plants a framework to grow into, while a wildflower lawn sits alongside a more traditional one, giving the garden a relaxed edge and a clean, usable space for everyday life.
Planting throughout was designed and installed by Nick and Duncan, tying the whole garden together.
